Situated in upper Majuli and north-eastern region of the worlds famous river Island Majuli, Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College, Ratanpur Miri, was established in the year 1973. Ever since its establishment the college has fulfilled the needs of Higher Education for the people of Majuli and adjoining areas. The college bears its present existence and status after prolonged struggles and sacrifices of its teachers, employed and the continuous efforts of the local people. Starting with a very small number of students at the initial stage and facing numberless of problems, the college received Pre-Degree recognition in 1983 and degree affiliation under Dibrughar University in 1987. Finally, it was brought under Deficit Grant in Aid system in 1988. The college, though located in educationally backward and geographically cut off region, has endeavoured its utmost in spreading the light of education and creating a congenial environment for teaching, learning and research activities. Mental and physical upliftment of student is the motto of the institution. Moreover, it aims at inculcating high social, moral and national values in learners. By encouraging students for Extracurricular activities, games and sports, music and culture, team work for social service and other related activities. The college emphasizes a holistic approach to education. Students are here encouraged to develop a competitive outlook for seeking job opportunities and facing the practical challenge of establishing themselves as responsible and self dependent citizens of the society. The purpose of this institution is to regard education as a mission rather than a profession. In 2004 U.M.K. College was accredited Grade C++ by NAAC, an autonomous U.G.C. sponsored institution for quality evaluation. It has been provincialised under Assam. College Employees Provincialisation Act 2005. Continuous quality upgradtion is the slogan of NAAC, of the U.G.C and of this institution. May the teacher and the learners pursue this aim of Higher Education for ever.
